The majority of wind turbine failure is caused by faults in the drivetrain.  Vibration-based condition monitoring is widely used for assessing wind turbine drivetrain components, however, the cost of such systems can be high.  In response to this, a novel new technique, based on airborne sound generated by the rotating machinery and using microphone sensors, is being developed which can reduce the cost of condition-based maintenance for wind turbines.
